For people living alone one of the biggest barriers to a healthy old age and continuing independence is the ability-or inclination-to provide nutritious meals for themselves. Cooking for one can be tedious and it's often much easier to resort to takeaway food or tinned and frozen meals.
Tender Loving Cuisine, the delicious Meals-on-Wheels alternative, is big on fresh vegetables. Recognising Australia's love for and need of vegetables, Tender Loving Cuisine (TLC) prides itself on delivering fresh vegetables to its elderly and disabled customers each week.
Tender Loving Cuisine's Chief Executive Officer Jack Barker has re-affirmed his support of the Heart Foundation's Tick program. "More than half of our home delivered meals already carry the Heart Foundation Tick of approval because they meet strict nutrition standards," Mr. Barker said yesterday. "However, I think it appropriate to announce our continuing efforts to have more of our dinners carry the Tick. We have living proof among our clients that our nutritious meals allow people to live at home longer rather than go into nursing homes." Vegetables are a very important part of healthier meals and even meals that do not have a Heart Foundation Tick include at least 100g of vegetables.
COLLEEN Grady of Miller doesn't care for cooking as it literally leaves her breathless. Ms Grady suffers from asthma, emphysema and an allergy to mould. "The stove causes a problem because it heats up the kitchen and affects my breathing," she said. "I go to hospital about four to six times a year: when I go home, I am not able to cook."
Increased production of home delivered meals from Tender Loving Cuisine (TLC) is good news for the elderly and disabled of Sydney, Newcastle and the Central Coast. Tender Loving Cuisine's chefs are cranking up the production wheel to meet demand from clients of the fast-growing meals-on-wheels alternative. A new heat sealing machine is now in operation and two staff added as a direct result of more orders for the range of delicious dinners offered by TLC.
Why would someone who has just had a major heart attack, and by-pass surgery, want to offer their time to deliver meals to others? Why would someone agree to clock up 250 kilometres a day, in their own vehicle, running meals from house to house? And why would someone who has spent their entire lives teaching schoolchildren want to serve the elderly?
TENDER Loving Cuisine is an organisation, which delivers healthy meals to the elderly throughout Sydney, Newcastle and the Central Coast and is manned by a group of go-ahead veterans aged 60-plus. This team of livewire "oldies" is throwing down the challenge to the more established organisations by providing a unique home delivery service.
TENDER beef and a bit of loving care have proved to be a winning recipe for a new meal service. Tender Loving Cuisine is a new gourmet service which offers personal attention on the side. It began in Sydney in 1995, in conjunction with NSW Health. It has many Heart-Foundation Tick approved meals including roast lamb, beef, pork, mild chicken curry, casserole or fish.
